About

About Michael J. Henderson

My name is Michael J. Henderson, and I founded Sierra Management Solutions in 2024 with the goal of providing professional and convenient mobile notary services to South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding communities.

As a California-licensed Notary Public, I am proud to serve individuals, families, businesses, and organizations throughout the South Lake Tahoe basin and surrounding areas. I understand that finding convenient notary services can sometimes be challenging, particularly for individuals who may have limited transportation or mobility. That is why I offer mobile services designed to bring professional notary assistance directly to my clients.

Before establishing Sierra Management Solutions, I spent many years building a career in technology and business operations. My experience includes serving as an IT Manager for organizations such as Stanford's adult and children's hospitals, Electronic Arts, Franklin Templeton, and Clorox, as well as several technology startups during the early 2000s. I also served as a Program Manager at ServiceNow, where I managed and supported multiple strategic IT initiatives.

In 2024, I made the decision to transition from my career in IT and pursue a new path in the notary services industry. I have always enjoyed working with people, solving problems, and finding ways to help others, and I saw an opportunity to bring those values into a service that directly benefits my local community.

One of my goals is to make notary services as accessible as possible. By offering mobile appointments throughout South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding areas, I hope to assist clients who may not have reliable transportation, are unable to drive, or simply prefer the convenience of having a notary come to them.

Thank you for visiting the Sierra Management Solutions website. I appreciate the opportunity to serve our local community and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about our services, availability, or rates.

Sincerely,
Michael J. Henderson

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

A notary public is a state-appointed official who serves as an impartial witness when people sign important documents. They verify identity, confirm the signer is acting willingly, and keep a record of the transaction. In California, notaries are commissioned by the Secretary of State for a 4-year term. There are roughly 180,000 active notaries in the state.

Three main things: verify the signer's ID, witness the signature or administer an oath, and stamp the document with their official seal. The notary also records each notarization in their journal with the date, type of act, document description, and signer information. This journal is a legal record that can be subpoenaed.

In California, $15 per signature is the maximum fee for acknowledgments and jurats. That limit is set by the State of California. Because I come to you, Sierra Management Solutions also charges a $75 service fee per visit. There is no travel fee within 10 miles of the "Y" in South Lake Tahoe; beyond that, travel is $0.90 per mile. See the Pricing section above for the full breakdown.

Common ones: deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, affidavits, and loan documents. County recorders require notarized deeds before they will record a property transfer. Courts require notarized affidavits and sworn declarations. Lenders require notarized mortgage documents. Some documents do not require notarization but include a notary certificate as an option.

A current government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID card). The ID must be current or issued within the past 5 years. Bring the document itself, unsigned unless it requires an acknowledgment (acknowledgments can be signed before the appointment). Bring the full document, not just the signature page.

No. Notaries are not attorneys (unless they also happen to be licensed lawyers). They cannot tell you what a document means, whether you should sign it, or how to fill it out. This is one of the most important boundaries for notaries. Explaining a document or advising a signer to sign (or not sign) is unauthorized practice of law.

An acknowledgment means the signer appeared before the notary and acknowledged signing the document. The signer can sign before the appointment. A jurat means the signer swore under oath and signed in the notary's presence. For a jurat, the signer must sign right there in front of the notary. Both cost $15. The main difference: acknowledgments are about identity and willingness, jurats are about oath and presence.

California does not have a blanket prohibition, but a notary should not notarize any document where they have a financial interest in the transaction. For example, a notary who is a beneficiary of a trust should not notarize the trust documents, and a notary should not notarize a deed their spouse is signing. As a best practice, use a notary who is not an immediate family member.
